DRAWING RESTRAINT 13 was performed at the Gladstone Gallery, New York as a reenactment of two historical events. The first, a beach landing made by General Douglas MacArthur and key figures of the exiled Philippine government on Luzon, Philippine Islands, on October 20, 1944. In the performance, General MacArthur (Matthew Barney) disembarks in the Gladstone Gallery and wades through a volume of cast petroleum jelly, after which he traverses the gallery floor towards a signing table. The second reenactment is the signing of the Instrument of Surrender, the document confirming Japan's surrender and the end of World War II. At the signing table in the DRAWING RESTRAINT action, nineteen drawings from DRAWING RESTRAINT 9 were signed by General MacArthur (Matthew Barney), with the assistance of an American delegate (Barbara Gladstone), and a Japanese delegate (Shunichi Yamaguchi). After the signing, the drawings were installed in the Gallery.
