DRAWING RESTRAINT 16 was performed at the Serpentine Gallery, London in 2007 and employed the elastic leg restraint established in Drawing Restraint 1, in this case counter-weighted by two drums of petroleum jelly. Following an ascent up the gallery wall, a drawing was made on the pendentive at the top of each corner of the room. The four drawings depicted an oil refinery, a Shinto Torii, a digestive tract, and a flensed whale, suggesting a concise lexicon of the Drawing Restraint 9 narrative. Next, eccentric skis made from framed portraits of the male and female Guests from Drawing Restraint 9 were worn to ascend a vertical pole that disappeared into the Gallery's central oculus. Several attempts were made to climb the pole and make a drawing on the oculus panel, while only one mark was successfully made.
