DRAWING RESTRAINT 3 used an Olympic barbell cast in petroleum wax and petroleum jelly. The hands of the artist were chalked with calcium carbonate. The bar was gripped for the clean and jerk. The grip was then released and the chalk that had fallen from the hand was documented on the plate beneath the weight. This was the first piece in the series that rendered a character of refusal. DRAWING RESTRAINT 3 was the beginning of a more narrative approach to the Drawing Restraint project.
